Public Lectures for Non-Scientists

Kirksville Chapter of Sigma Xi

Science and technology impacts every aspect of our lives.  It is important, therefore, that everyone has at least a basic understanding of science.  This is particularly true in a democracy where all citizens have a voice in formulating society's laws and priorities.  In order to increase our community's awareness of current scientific topics, the Kirksville Chapter of Sigma Xi sponsors non-technical talks which are intended for adults (and high-school students) who do not have a background in science.  These lectures are free and open to the public.  For more information about these lectures, contact any member of the Kirksville Sigma Xi Outreach Committee.

At the Wooden Nickel

The Kirksville Chapter of Sigma Xi is sponsoring its first Science Cafe on Friday, March 30. Come join us at the Wooden Nickel at 5:30 pm for a discussion of the science of high blood pressure. Dr. Fruzsina Johnson, the speaker for this inaugural science cafe, is on faculty at Lincoln Memorial University, DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Department of Physiology and a researcher with the Consortium of Integrative Cardiovascular Research. Further information about her research interests and career is available at http://cvlabs.org/fjohnson/invesitgators/fruzsi.htm . Following a brief presentation by Dr. Johnson, science cafe attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss hypertension, what research has told us so far and what is on the future research front lines.
